May is Mental Health Awareness Month…there’s so much to be said about the importance of mental health. In this blog I am going to focus on the power of our thought life and give you some kickass affirmations to boost your mental game.
May is also a month when people start thinking about the warmer weather. It’s when we start pulling out our Spring and Summer attire. It’s when women start thinking about swimsuit season (often with dread…or is it just me??)
On that note, it’s often when people start to have negative thoughts about their body. On top of that, if you are in your midlife years, you may be feeling sadness about how your body is changing. If you are like me, maybe you’re just pissed.
Wherever you are at with the approaching swimsuit season, the anxiety, fear, sadness or general self-criticism is not helpful. After all, you have been through so much in the past year with the pandemic and it’s possible you have put on some extra weight. NBD.
This month, I am going to focus on affirmations that will be helpful for your mental and physical health *as you are right now*. (Can you tell what I’m working on?!)
Here is the reality: if you are not able to love yourself as you are, in the NOW, you likely won’t be able to love yourself, even if you lose 5, 10, 20 or more pounds. And, if you lose some weight, chances are high that you won’t love yourself in your new, smaller size. You will likely find something else about yourself that you don’t love. Amiright?!
Here’s the thing: Negative energy is unhelpful. And negative energy breeds more negative energy. Extra “not helpful”.
If you can’t appreciate all the amazing things that your body does NOW, it will be harder to lose whatever weight you are hoping to lose because there is negative energy surrounding your view of yourself. Change that negative energy by replacing it with more helpful, more positive energy and you will feel so much better about yourself in the NOW, which will directly impact how you feel about yourself in any body shape and weight you find yourself in the future.
Start with these simple affirmations:
My body is strong.
I love my (fill in the blank) because it (list what it does for you). Repeat this as much as you can with as many body parts as you can).
I am confident.
I am happy.
I am amazing.
I am capable.
I am always learning and growing.
I am a fucking Champion.
Write them down and post them where you will see them.
Pick your favorite one or two and say them to yourself throughout the day.
Stand or sit up tall when you say them. Breathe deeply.
Even if you don’t believe each statement, say them AS IF YOU DO. Eventually, you will come to believe them about yourself.
Let me know how it goes, if you think it’s a load of crock or if you have any questions.
