I can replace my negative (not-s0-helpful)
thoughts with more helpful thoughts.
Just as I shared in the previous blog, you really CAN replace your negative thoughts (and negative energy) with more helpful, more positive thoughts (and energy!). It’s true…I was SO INCREDIBLY negative for much of my life. I was not always easy to live with as my negativity had a way of distorting my thinking and keeping me small. I was so negative, I didn’t even want to be around me!
It doesn’t happen overnight, but you may surprise yourself as to how easy (and quick) it can actually be to transform your thoughts and energy! In the beginning of my own transformation, I thought affirmations were woo-woo and stupid, so I did some big-time eye rolls anytime anyone mentioned affirmations, BUT…when life got real lifey and brought about unbearable pain, I could see that my negativity would send me in a tailspin that I might not get out of. Bottom line: I was desperate.
And you know what? I was able to turn my life around in big ways over a relatively short amount of time. A BIG part of that was because of the affirmation work I was doing. I didn’t always feel like it and I didn’t always believe what I was saying at first, but I kept it up and over time, I started noticing small changes, first in my thinking and later in my behaviors. I became more and more aware of my less-than-helpful thoughts and my negative energy. I was able to replace those thoughts with new thoughts and feelings that were more validating and supportive. In turn, my energy changed. My emotions balanced out and I was able to see more clearly the ways in which my life was really good. Not perfect, but really good.
When I started out making these small changes, I was on my own. I searched YouTube and listened to affirmations while I went on walks. I would listen to the same ones over and over. I would listen before bedtime. I would listen while doing chores. I was grasping for anything that would help me not fall into a dark pit of despair.
That said, there was a time that my negativity and anger was still alarming. I knew if I didn’t get help, it would probably take years off my life. Literally.
That’s when I reached out for help and started working with a life coach. Only THEN, did my growth explode. WHY? Because I had someone who could help me see the ways in which my negative thoughts had taken root. I was so negative I couldn’t even see all the ways I was negative! Within 8 months of working with my coach, I had changed so radically that I was feeling emotionally lighter, more confident and I had lost 40 pounds to boot! THAT was just the start of my transformation. Over the course of the last three years, I have become a student in the areas of growth mindset. I have healed from quite a bit of trauma, healed from a divorce, came out (to myself, then my husband, kids and others). I quit a job I hated and started several businesses doing things I LOVE: painting, coaching and my newest business venture as a Professional Organizer. It’s been utterly transformative!
My partner does not believe me that I was such a negative person because that is just not who I am anymore. Sure, I can get sad, despondent, mad and occasionally really negative. When that happens, I am able to notice my negative thoughts, work through my stories about those negative thoughts and then replace them with more accurate and more helpful thoughts. It’s like…magic…(but, well…it’s not).

I would LOVE to hear from you. Let me know what you think!
Have you ever thought about coaching? A Coach is there to support, validate and nurture the client. A coach can offer potential solutions or suggestions. Many times, a coach simply offers empathy, a listening ear and a safe space to let out whatever is going on. Coaching is for everyone. Anyone can benefit from good coaching. There are a lot of good coaches out there, I’m sure. I’m not the only one. Often, it is just hard as hell to know where to start looking and what to look for in a good coach. If you have questions about coaching, let me know. I’d love to answer them. I always offer a free coaching call (or two…) to see if it’s a good fit for you.
